H.Simpson, 1898; Sailing adventures while captain: During a huge storm on 25 October 1898, the W.H. Simpson went out into the teeth of the storm to the rescue the crew of the sinking schooner Barbarian off North Point, Milwaukee Bay. The Milwaukee lifesaving station had launched its small boat to try to get the crew off before it went under, and this lifesaving boat was towed out to the Barbarian by Captain Caswell in his tug W. H. Simpson. Capt. Caswell successfully brought the small boat alongside the schooner, whose all-Chicago-based crew jumped into and somehow all made it as the little lifeboat was tossed around like a toy in the surf and waves. Once everyone was aboard the lifesaving station’s small boat, theW. H. Simpson took it in tow again, bringing it successfully ashore in Milwaukee, all of the schooner’s crew saved. There is no known photo of the Barbarian .20 On 03 August 1898, the W. H. Simpson towed the scow Dan Hayes, nearly capsized and in danger of sinking off Fox Point during a gale, to port in Milwaukee. The crew of theHayeshad abandoned it in the ship’s yawland made it successfully to shore, though just barely in the huge waves. The towing of the Hayes from Fox Point to the port of Milwaukee during the storm was coordinated by the Milwaukee branch of the US Lifesaving Service. 21 Above right: the scow schooner Dan Hayes.
