Antique of the Month - A 19th Century Single-Draw Brass and Leather Maritime Spyglass)

This month’s Antique of the Month from the Historic Johanna Brotch House is a single-draw maritime spy glass from the late 19th Century. With the single-draw pulled all the way out (to increase magnification), it stretches out to be the largest of any of the many other maritime spy glasses I have in my collection. This one is also only one of three from the USA, the other two already featured here (the Civil War-era and the personal one once belonging to Maine clipper ship captain Charles H. Reed. This one has no provenance, unfortunately. I purchased it forty years ago while serving on a US Navy destroyer on the US east coast in Charleston, South Carolina. It’s solid brass with a black leather center area for holding up to the eye. It’s a nice one, hope you enjoy the photos!
