He owned the schooner Z. G. Simmons at the start of the 1890 sailing season, but never confirmed as captain.  He is also connected to the schooner Norman, though in what capacity and what date(s) is unknown.

Above right:  the schooner-barge Athens, 1903-04, 06;  Sailing adventures while captain:  On 21 November 1906, Captain Mackie and his entire crew was reported as being lost during a storm in Lake Erie (per news articles above) after its tow line from the steamship Pratt snapped.  However, three days later on 24 November they were all reported safe and tugs brought the Athens back to port.  Photo courtesy John O.
