Antique of the Month -A 1905 Edison Gem Phonograph, Model B (it still works!)
This month’s Antique of the Month from the Historic Johanna Brotch House is an original Edison Gem Model B Phonograph from 1905. This model features a wind-up handle instead of a key that was on the Model A. It plays two-minute cylinder discs made of wax. This machine allowed people, for the first time in world history (!), to hear any type of audio recording. Invented by Thomas Edison in 1878, it didn’t go into full production until 1898 because he diverted his attention to perfecting the incandescent light bulb. Note the carrying case with the “Edison” logo on it and the different parts that are used in its operation. A beautiful working antique from a special time in American history. I hope you enjoy the photos!
