Antique of the Month -A 19th or Early 20th Century Maritime-Themed Mustard Box
This month’s Antique of the Month from the Historic Johanna Brotch House is a Mustard Box I bought in England that’s decorated in a maritime theme. While I’d wish this was hand-painted, I don’t think it is. Somehow, and I don’t know how, the art appears to be imprinted on the tin. But how this could be done I do now know. There are several areas where you can see it’s curved and undulating, yet the art is seamless. Don’t know how that can be accomplished in an industrial way, outside of hand-painting, but there it is. I’m not sure how mustard in this day was distributed, perhaps (or obviously) the mustard must have been inside individual containers that fit into this larger tin box. I hope you enjoy the photos!
